This past weekend when we were decorating for Halloween, Arno just asked me “do you have black craft paper?” and lo and behold I had a whole pack of it that had been sitting in a drawer for most of a decade (anyone else do that with craft supplies?). So, he takes credit for this super easy and adorable DIY. I just love how these bats turned out! I’m picky with Halloween decor, and these bats are minimal and still work well with the style of our home.
Since I was making a template for us to use, I thought I’d offer it to you too, in case you’d also like to bat-ify your home for Halloween!
You’ll Need:
- Black craft paper
- Scissors
- Tape or sticky tack
- Printable Template
How To:
- Print out the template. Cardstock works best since it will be easier to trace around.
- Trace the bats onto the craft paper with a pencil
- Cut them out along the solid lines
- Use the dashed line as a guide to bend the wings for a 3D effect.
- Stick them to the wall with tape or sticky tack (I used masking tape)
That’s it! It’s a lot of cutting but otherwise super easy. For placement, I find it’s best to pick a direction for the bats to be “flying” in, and place the big ones first. Then, fill in with the medium and small bats. Keep the spaces between the bats somewhat uneven for a more natural look.
I think these bats would look so cute on and around a mirror (especially in an entryway!) or incorporated into a gallery wall, or even flying onto the ceiling! The smallest bats could be added to garland too! Basically, I’ll have to stop myself from covering our whole apartment in paper bats haha.
If you make these Halloween paper bats, please send me a photo! I’d love to see!
