“The beauty of anti-racism is that you don’t have to pretend to be free of racism to be an anti-racist. Anti-racism is the commitment to fight racism wherever you find it, including in yourself. And it’s the only way forward.”
— IJEOMA OLUO
I love the above quote because it shows how white people can be anti-racist without getting caught up in the need to prove how “good” and “not racist” we are; which is really just another way of prioritizing our own feelings. I’m certainly guilty of that. I think it’s impossible to grow up white in this world, immersed in the pollution of racism and white supremacy that our society is built on, and not take any of it in. The delusion that we can is a huge part of the problem, and dismisses the suffering of those who don’t have white privilege.
There is a wealth of educational resources and works of art created mostly by BIPOC that we can learn from and I thought it might be helpful to share some that have had an impact on me, as well as resources I’ve heard recommended again and again. It is most certainly not the job of BIPOC to educate white people. That said, I am so, so thankful for all the time, energy, thought, love, and grace that went into every resource on this list. I’m listening, learning, and committed to doing and being better.
